Instructors: What is Respondus LockDown Browser?

Updated on

Overview

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure web browser designed to help protect the integrity of online assessments in Canvas.

When students use LockDown Browser to take a quiz or exam:

  • The testing environment is restricted.
  • Students cannot print, copy, or capture assessment content.
  • Access to other websites and applications is blocked.
  • The assessment cannot be closed until it has been submitted for grading.

If a quiz is configured to require LockDown Browser, students must use LockDown Browser to access it. Standard web browsers cannot be used to open the assessment.

How LockDown Browser Differs from a Standard Browser

Although LockDown Browser functions similarly to a regular web browser, several features are modified or disabled to create a secure testing environment.

Modified Toolbar

The browser toolbar is simplified and includes only the following navigation buttons:

  • Back
  • Forward
  • Refresh
  • Stop

Full-Screen Assessment Mode

Assessments are displayed in full-screen mode and cannot be:

  • Minimized
  • Resized
  • Closed until the assessment is submitted

Disabled Controls

To help maintain test security, LockDown Browser disables:

  • Printing
  • Copy and paste functions
  • Keyboard shortcuts and key combinations
  • Screen capture tools
  • Function keys
  • Right-click menus

Secure Web Links

Links included within an assessment can connect to approved web resources without compromising the secure testing environment.

Blocked Applications and Features

LockDown Browser prevents access to many system and application features, including:

  • The Windows Start menu
  • System tray controls
  • Computer menu bars
  • Screen-sharing applications
  • Messaging applications
  • Screen capture software
  • Network monitoring tools
