Record a Video with Panopto in Canvas

Panopto is the perfect place to record lectures, assignments, and other important material that students can access directly through Canvas. Not only can you create videos from Canvas, but you can also upload external videos, create video playlists and folders, and record your screen. It is an essential media tool that allows instructors and students to upload, review, assign, and submit assignments all integrated within the Canvas learning system.

Panopto allows you to record with the desktop recorder and in the web browser. In this guide we will show you the different ways you can record a video with Panopto.

Record on Windows desktop

To record on desktop, Panopto needs to be downloaded as the desktop. For instructions, visit our guide on downloading Panopto.  

1. You can open the desktop recorder directly through Canvas. Launch Canvas, and select Panopto Course Videos.

2. Tap +Create.

3. Select Panopto for Windows.

4. Panopto desktop recorder will launch on your Windows device.

Before you begin recording, make sure your settings are correct.

  1. Choose a folder you would like to upload the recording to. (You can always move the recording to a different folder later.)
  2. Ensure your Video and Audio settings are correct.
  3. If applicable, choose to capture your main screen, second screen, or PowerPoint.

5. When you are finished, you can enter a name and description for your recording, then click Done.

The recording will upload to the folder you selected.

Record on Mac desktop

To record on desktop, Panopto needs to be downloaded as the desktop. For instructions on how to do so visit our guide on downloading Panopto.  

1. You can open the desktop recorder directly through Canvas. Launch Canvas, and select Panopto Course Videos.

2. Tap +Create.

3. Select Panopto for Mac.

4. Panopto desktop recorder will launch on your Mac device.

5. Before you begin recording, make sure your settings are correct.

  1. Choose a folder you would like to upload the recording to. (You can always move the recording to a different folder later.)
  2. Ensure your Video and Audio settings are correct.
  3. If applicable, choose to record your main screen, second screen, or PowerPoint.

6. When you are finished, you can enter a name and description for your recording, then click Upload.

The recording will upload to the folder you selected.

7. Your recording will upload and appear in the desktop window.

To edit your recording, select Manage Online Recordings.

There are also quick links for you to share, edit, or view online.

Record in Web Browser

1. Open Panopto Course Videos in Canvas.

2. Select +Create.

3. When the menu appears, click Panopto Capture.

This will enable you to record a video with your web browser.

4. The camera will appear, be sure to allow access to camera and microphone.

5. Select the red record button to start recording a video. You can also share your screen, or record audio only, just choose from the selection at the top of your screen.

6. When your video is finished, you can preview the video, enter a name, choose a folder to upload, and enter a description.

Success! Now you can record videos with Panopto.
