Add Captions to Panopto Video

Adding closed captions is essential for making your videos more accessible to individuals with disabilities. It also ensures your viewers receive clear communication on the subject material in your Panopto Videos.

There are a number of ways to do add captions, however, in this guide we walk you through adding captions automatically. It's the quickest and easiest way to do so, and you can always edit them later if needed.

We will also reveal how to upload a caption script or request automatic machine captioning.

Import automatic captions

1. Open Panopto Course Videos through Canvas, or directly through alamo.hosted.panopto.com.

2. Locate the video you would like to add captions to.

3. Open the video editor.

4. There are two ways to open the video editor:

  1. Select the Kebab Menu (three vertical dots) > Edit.
  2. Or select the video > locate pencil icon in viewer > Edit.

5. In the video editor, go to Captions, and hit the drop-down menu.

6. If your video has sound, you can Import automatic captions.

7. If you imported captions automatically, they will appear in the left navigation panel of the video editor.

If you need to edit the captions, simply double click on any of the text.

8. Once finished, be sure to select Apply, or your changes will not be saved.

9. Press OK to save changes and close the video editor. Don't worry, you can easily re-open the editor in the next step.

Request automatic captions or upload transcript file

If you do not see the option to import automatic captions, then select Upload or request captions.

  1. You can Request Captions automatically. Select Automatic Machine Captions, and press Order.
  2. If you have an audio transcript prepared, you can upload it.

Note: Requesting captions may take some time to import. Wait at least 30 minutes to let Panopto review your video import automatic captions.

3. If you chose to upload a transcript, select the file from your computer and upload.

Captions will appear in the left navigation panel of the video editor.

If you need to edit the captions, simply double click on any of the text.

4. Once finished, be sure to select Apply, or your changes will not be saved.

5. Press OK to save and changes and close the video editor. Don't worry, you can easily re-open the editor in the next step.

Viewing Captions

When you close the video editor, the preview page will appear, allowing you to review your changes and make necessary adjustments if need be.

1. To preview your captions, select the closed captioning icon at the bottom left of the video player.
