How to Verify Students Have Read and Acknowledged the Syllabus

Updated on

The Student Engagement Report in Simple Syllabus gives instructors the ability to see how many times each student has viewed the syllabus, as well as when they most recently viewed it.

Once a syllabus is published by the instructor, Simple Syllabus calculates and displays how much of the syllabus a student enrolled in the course has read. As a student begins to read the document, the tool determines how much of the syllabus has been viewed in relationship to the final component listed on Syllabus page. When they reach the end (or read 100% of the document), they receive an Acknowledge button to verify they have read the syllabus.

Instructors can view which of their enrolled students have read and acknowledged the syllabus in the Student Engagement report.

Accessing the Student Engagement Report

Instructors can access the Student Engagement report from the Simple Syllabus LTI in Canvas or through their Simple Syllabus dashboard.

From Canvas

Navigate to the Course Syllabus link [A] in your Canvas course navigation menu and locate the blue horizontal bar [B] at the top of the published syllabus. Hovering your mouse over the dark blue line will detail how many students have viewed the syllabus, and the light blue line will indicate how many students have yet to view the syllabus.

Click on the blue horizontal line to view the Student Engagement report.

For cross-listed Canvas courses, the appropriate section-level syllabus will display for students when they click on the Course Syllabus link in the course navigation menu. However, instructors will receive a "This course is not currently setup with Simple Syllabus" error message when they select the same link.

To view a Student Engagement report for cross-listed Canvas sections, you will need to access the published syllabus from your Simple Syllabus dashboard.

From the Simple Syllabus Dashboard

Navigate to your Simple Syllabus dashboard from ACES and select the Published tab [A]. Locate the syllabus by selecting the appropriate Term [B], then selecting the blue horizontal bar [C] beneath the "View," "Print," and "Share" buttons. Hovering your mouse over the dark blue line will detail how many students have viewed the syllabus, and the light blue line will indicate how many students have yet to view the syllabus.

Click on the blue horizontal line to view the Student Engagement report.

Viewing the Student Engagement Report

Clicking on the blue horizontal bar opens the Student Engagement report in a pop-up window. The detailed report provides a list of which enrolled students have read the syllabus [A], how many times they've viewed it [B], what percent was read [C], and when it was last viewed [D].

Students who have verified they have read the syllabus will have a green acknowledgment icon [E] next to their Percent Read value. To view the latest data, select the Refresh button [F] in the upper right of the window.

Currently the Student Engagement report does not pass back a student's "Acknowledgment" score to the Canvas gradebook. See the Simple Syllabus Transition FAQs for more information.
