SoftChalk is a digital curriculum authoring platform that educators can use to create web-based learning content such as interactive lessons and activities that are delivered to learners through a standard web browser.
There are two options for creating content with SoftChalk:
The following guide provides the recommended system specifications and supported browsers to use with SoftChalk.
Authoring Content with SoftChalk Create (Online and Desktop Versions)
Hardware
Memory: 4 Gigabytes (GB) of RAM is recommended
Software
Operating System:
- Windows: 7/8/10
- Apple: macOS X 10.11 or higher
Browsers: For the best user experience, it is recommended that you use an up-to-date web browser that is also compatible with the Canvas learning management system. Please refer to the following guide for using a supported browser with Canvas.
Supported Media Types:
- Images: gif, jpg, png
- Audio: wav, au, mp3, mp4, aiff, ram
- Video: avi, mov, mpg, YouTube
- Other Files: PDF, Webwidget, Storyline, Articulate, Camtasia, Captivate, PowerPoint, Excel, Word
Each licensed user is limited to 2 GB of storage in the SoftChalk Cloud. To save on storage capacity, it is recommended that large audio/video and electronic files be linked from cloud-streaming or cloud-sharing services such as the following:
- Video Cloud-Streaming Services: MediaSite, My Media, Vimeo, or YouTube
- Cloud-Sharing Services: Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive

Viewing SoftChalk Cloud Content
Hardware
Memory/Disk Space: Since SoftChalk content is viewed in a standard web browser, no additional RAM or disk space is needed beyond that which is required to operate the browser.
Software
Operating Systems:
- Windows: 7/8/10, Vista
- Apple: macOS X 10.11 or higher
Browsers: For the best user experience, it is recommended that you use an up-to-date web browser that is also compatible with the Canvas learning management system. Please refer to the following guide for using a supported browser with Canvas.
Mobile Devices – Web: Viewing content on most smart phones and tablets is supported; no special app is required for viewing the content in a web browser.
- iOS: SoftChalk content can be viewed with most mobile-device web browsers and has been tested with iPads and iPhones.
- Android: SoftChalk content can be viewed with most mobile-device web browsers and has been tested with smart phones/tablets running Android 2 or higher operating systems. For Android devices, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera mobile browsers are recommended.
