Logging into Turnitin.com (outside of Canvas)

For the best student experience, we encourage you to use one of the two available options for integrating Turnitin with your Canvas courses.

Reasons for using the standalone Turnitin system

  • If you want to use Turnitin for face-to-face classes and are not using Canvas to supplement those classes
  • If you are having difficulty with the Canvas integrations for any reason

Things to keep in mind

  • You will need to set up your courses in Turnitin.com and provide students with the manually created course code (this is automated with the Canvas integration)
  • Students will need to set up a Turnitin.com account and create/remember a separate password from ACES/Canvas
  • Assignments and grades created in Turnitin.com cannot send the score back to the Canvas Gradebook

Creating a Turnitin Account

Users who use Turnitin LTI 1.3 within Canvas automatically have their Turnitin account created for them when they launch the external tool from Canvas. However, if you use Turnitin's Plagiarism Framework exclusively with your Canvas courses—or if this will be your first time accessing the Alamo Colleges' Turnitin account—you will need to create an account in order to log into Turnitin.com.

To create a Turnitin account, log into any Canvas course where you have editing permissions and navigate to the Assignments Index page.

  1. Launch Turnitin LTI 1.3 from the Course Assignments Menu [three vertical dots] in the upper right.
  1. A modal will appear for you to create an assignment. Select the classic Standard Assignment type.
  1. Give the assignment a Title and click Submit.
  1. Once the assignment appears in your Assignments Index page, click the title to open the Turnitin Assignment Inbox.

You do not need to Publish the newly created assignment in order to create your account with Turnitin.

  1. A modal will appear with the Turnitin End-User License Agreement; click I agree to continue with the account creation.
  1. An AI Writing notification will appear in a second modal; select either option to view the Assignment Inbox.

Your Turnitin account has been created; proceed to the next section to log into Turnitin.com for the first time.

Initial Login to Turnitin.com

Once your Turnitin profile has been created through Canvas, you will need to reset your password in order to access your newly created account within Turnitin.com.

Navigate to Turnitin.com in your web browser and select the Log In link in the upper right, then select Log in as instructor or student from the drop-down menu. You will be directed to the Turnitin Login page.

  1. Select the Forgot your password? link towards the bottom of the Login screen.
Select the "Forgot your password?" link from the Turnitin Login screen
  1. You will be prompted to enter the default email associated with your Canvas account and your last name as it is listed in Canvas. Click Next to proceed.
Enter the email and last name associated with your account
  1. A message from Turnitin No Reply with the subject "Reset your Turnitin Password" will be sent to the email on the account, and the message will contain a secure link to reset your Turnitin.com password.
Answer the security question or select "Forgot your answer?" to reset your password

You will have 1 hour to reset your account password using the emailed link. Be sure to check your Spam, Bulk, or Junk folder if you do not receive the password reset message right away.
